Firefighters were called to the scene of an incident in which two vehicles rolled over on Friday, Dec. 30 around 12:30 p.m., according to the Stoneham Fire Department. Emergency crews found two vehicles on their sides, one in the breakdown lane and one in the high speed lane, and a third vehicle that had been involved in the crash in the high speed lane.
Fire crews broke the roof off of one of the sideways vehicles to extract a stuck individual, the Stoneham Fire Department said in an update. The freed person and two others were hospitalized at Lahey Hospital and Medical Center in Burlington.
The response to the incident became a team effort, as nearby fire departments in Reading, Woburn, and Wakefield assisted Stoneham by either sending ambulances, responding to calls within Stoneham, or covering Stoneham stations.
“All the crews worked together and did a great job,” said Capt. Jim Marshall.
I-93 was blocked because of the crash, causing delays of up to 50 minutes, according to MassDOT.
Massachusetts State Police are investigating the cause of the crash.
